National Cemetery Administration
National Day of Service 2024
WHAT: Carry The Load organizes volunteer events at national cemeteries to provide Americans with active ways to honor those who have served our country. The event includes a brief ceremony and instructions to volunteers on headstone cleaning and beautification. This is a great service opportunity for employee engagement, youth groups and individuals.
On Saturday, September 7, 2024, join Volunteers in Pennsylvania at Erie Cemetery at 10 a.m. (local time) or in Texas at Houston National Cemetery at 8 a.m. (local time). Erie Cemetery is a private cemetery that opened in 1851 and notable American Citizens and Veterans interred include individuals from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War. Restoring Veteran gravesites at historic private cemeteries is a community-led nationwide National Cemetery Administration effort.
On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, over 60 separate events will take place across our nation at 10:00 a.m. (local time) at participating national cemeteries except Quantico, Alexandria, and Culpeper in Virginia and Baltimore in Maryland, which will start at 9:00 a.m. (local time). Volunteers may arrive 30 minutes prior to start times to prepare for activities.
