February 28, 2023
WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA) announced today that the Veterans Cemetery Grants Program (VCGP), which it oversees, has awarded a grant of up to $2,127,018 to the state of Wisconsin for the expansion of Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner.
"Since the first interment on Nov. 10, 2000, NCA has contributed to the expansion of this cemetery," said Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Matthew Quinn. We are proud to help ensure this cemetery continues to exhibit national shrine standards and provide stellar services to Veterans and their families."
Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery currently serves more than 25,000 Veterans and their eligible family members living within 75 miles of the cemetery. The grant will fund 832 cremains gravesites, 1,200 columbarium niches, landscaping, and supporting infrastructure on approximately 2 acres of land.
Since its inception in 1978, the VCGP has provided more than $990 million to establish, expand, improve, and maintain 122 state, territorial and tribal Veterans cemeteries. In fiscal year 2022, these cemeteries conducted more than 45,000 interments.
