February 28, 2023
WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA) announced today that the Veterans Cemetery Grants Program (VCGP), which it oversees, has awarded a grant of up to $2,316,923 to the state of Virginia for the expansion of Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia.
"This cemetery was the first of three state Veterans cemeteries established in the Commonwealth, opening in December 1997," said Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Matthew Quinn. "Since its dedication, more than 6,000 Veterans and their dependents have been interred and we are proud to provide continued assistance to help this facility serve all the Veterans that call Virginia home."
The Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia currently serves more than 41,000 Veterans and their eligible family members living within 75 miles of the cemetery. The grant will fund 1,080 columbarium niches, landscaping, and supporting infrastructure on approximately 1 acre of land.
Since its inception in 1978, the VCGP has provided more than $990 million to establish, expand, improve, and maintain 122 state, territorial and tribal Veterans cemeteries. In fiscal year 2022, these cemeteries conducted more than 45,000 interments.
