VA Names New Cemetery In Fargo, North Dakota

WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced the name Fargo National Cemetery for the new national cemetery planned for construction in Fargo, North Dakota.
"We are pleased to expand burial service to Veterans and their families in North Dakota," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie. "The name clearly identifies this location, and will help promote access to VA burial benefits for Veterans in rural parts of North Dakota who have not previously had reasonable access to a national or state Veterans cemetery."
VA encourages local Veterans and community leaders to submit name suggestions. Of the names considered, "Fargo National Cemetery" best met VA's naming criteria and is consistent with the requirements specified in Title 38 United States Code, Section 531, requiring VA property, including national cemeteries, to be named for the geographic area in which the facility is located.
VA purchased the property at County Road 20, Cass County, North Dakota for $93,444.98 in June 2016. The cemetery will serve more than 30,000 Veterans, their spouses and eligible children in the Fargo area. Out of 20 million Veterans nationwide, 4.3 million live in rural communities.
This is the first national cemetery built in North Dakota as part of the VA National Cemetery Administration's Rural Initiative to provide access to VA burial benefits for Veterans in underserved rural areas. North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, managed by the state, is located 200 miles away.
