Texas Receives Grant for the Expansion of the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery
August 26, 2019
WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA) announced today that it has awarded Texas a grant in the amount of $1,966,125 for the expansion of the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi, Texas.
"Grants like this ensure continued accessibility to a local burial option for our Veterans across the Nation," said Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Randy Reeves. "Today more than 92% of all Veterans have a burial option within 75 miles of their home, and we maintain or increase that availability with every grant we provide."
This grant will fund the construction of 1,000 pre-placed crypts, irrigation, landscaping, and supporting infrastructure. The project will develop approximately 2.3 acres and will enable the cemetery to provide continued service for approximately 50,500 Veterans, their spouses and eligible family members.
The VA Veterans Cemetery Grants Program (VCGP) complements the 137 VA national cemeteries across the country. Since its inception 41 years ago, the VCGP has awarded grants totaling more than $817 million to establish, expand, improve, or operate and maintain 115 state and tribal Veterans cemeteries. These VA-funded cemeteries provided more than 39,000 burials in 2018.
