Louisiana Receives Grant to Expand Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery

September 21, 2022

WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration announced today that the Veterans Cemetery Grants Program (VCGP), which it oversees, has awarded a grant of up to $1,660,827 to the state of Louisiana for the expansion of Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Leesville.

"There are an estimated 284,074 Veterans in the state of Louisiana," said Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Matthew Quinn. "We are happy to be able to continue to provide financial support to help this cemetery serve Veterans and their families in this locale."

The Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery currently serves more than 53,000 Veterans and their eligible family members living within 75 miles of the cemetery. The grant will fund 240 columbarium niches, a water treatment plant, landscaping, and supporting infrastructure on approximately 17 acres of land.

Since its inception in 1978, the VCGP has provided more than $959 million to establish, expand, improve, operate and maintain 121 cemeteries in which Veterans are currently interred. In fiscal year 2021, these cemeteries conducted more than 45,000 burials.
