Kansas Receives Grant to Expand Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Dodge

August 4, 2023

WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA) announced today that the Veterans Cemetery Grants Program (VCGP), which it oversees, has awarded a grant of up to $642,322 to the state of Kansas for the expansion of Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Dodge.

"This cemetery was established in 2002. It replaced the Kansas Soldiers Home Cemetery which was part of the Kansas Soldier's Home at Fort Dodge, erected in 1890. Fort Dodge was an Army post in 1864," says Under Secretary of Memorial Affairs Matthew Quinn. "By awarding this grant, we help the state of Kansas continue to serve Veterans at this historical location.

The cemetery currently serves more than 6,000 Veterans and their eligible family members. The grant will fund construction of columbarium niches which will provide a projected ten additional years of this interment option as well as landscaping and irrigation for the expansion site.

Since its inception in 1978, the VCGP has provided more than $1 billion to establish, expand, improve, and maintain 122 state, territorial and tribal Veterans cemeteries. In fiscal year 2022, these cemeteries conducted more than 45,000 interments.
