Georgia Receives Grant to Expand Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Milledgeville

August 17, 2023

WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA) announced today that the Veterans Cemetery Grants Program (VCGP), which it oversees, has awarded a grant of up to $1,678,308 to the state of Georgia for the expansion of Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Milledgeville.

"This cemetery, established in 2001, has more than 5,137 Veterans and their spouses interred here. Many Veterans served in WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam Wars," says Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Matthew Quinn. "We are proud to help this cemetery expand efforts to continually provide stellar services to the communities in Milledgeville and surrounding areas."

The cemetery currently serves more than 169,000 Veterans and their eligible family members. The grant will fund 640 columbarium niches, landscaping, irrigation, improvements to select existing columbarium walls, and burial erosion control.

Since its inception in 1978, the VCGP has provided more than $1 billion to establish, expand, improve, and maintain 122 state, territorial and tribal Veterans cemeteries. In fiscal year 2022, these cemeteries conducted more than 45,000 interments.
