VA Acquires Land to Expand Fort Logan National Cemetery

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) National Cemetery Administration announced today that it has acquired 49.42 acres of land for future expansion of Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
"Fort Logan National Cemetery has served the Denver Veteran community for 130 years," said VA's Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Randy Reeves. "With this new acquisition our Veterans and their families will continue to have access to the burial benefits they have earned and deserve for decades to come."
The Department of Veterans Affairs acquired the property from the State of Colorado for $10,785,200. The new land is located directly adjacent to the South side of the existing cemetery grounds. Fort Logan National Cemetery was established in 1889 and before this expansion the cemetery consisted of 214 acres of land, 94% of which had already been developed. More than 138,000 Veterans and eligible family members are interred there. Current estimates project that the additional land will extend the burial capacity at Fort Logan National Cemetery by more than 40 years.
VA operates 138 national cemeteries and 33 soldiers' lots and monument sites in 41 states and Puerto Rico. For Veterans not buried in a VA national cemetery, VA provides headstones, markers or medallions to commemorate their service.
