Arizona Receives Grant to Expand Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Camp Navajo
September 30, 2022
WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration announced today that the Veterans Cemetery Grants Program (VCGP), which it oversees, has awarded a grant of up to $2,086,205.83 to the state of Arizona for the expansion of Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Camp Navajo in Bellemont.
"Expansion of state Veteran cemeteries is paramount to our mission to provide stellar service to Veterans and their families," said Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Matthew Quinn. "This expansion makes it easier for grieving families to keep their loved ones close to home."
The cemetery currently serves more than 32,000 Veterans and their eligible family members living within 75 miles of the cemetery. The grant will fund 880 columbarium niches, a concrete slab for a state-supplied maintenance shed, rain gutters on the administration building and committal service shelter, supporting infrastructure, landscaping, and irrigation on approximately 0.53 acres of land.
Since its inception in 1978, the VCGP has provided more than $959 million to establish, expand, improve, operate, and maintain 121 cemeteries in which Veterans are currently interred. In fiscal year 2021, these cemeteries conducted more than 45,000 burials.
